What is no longer around though is Checkbook's BARGAINS newsletter, which was printed twice a year. The newsletter listed prices charged by local stores for such popular big-ticket purchases as refrigerators, TVs, tires and chain saws. This was only for D.C.-area subscribers and served as a handy shopping tool. Its reasons, listed in the first issue of Update (the replacement for BARGAINS), explain a lot about today's retail market-for better and for worse: But Checkbook recently decided to stop publishing the 22-year-old BARGAINS. * "The number of independent retailers-the sources of the BARGAINS prices that consistently beat the prices of the chains and big-box stores for appliances, electronics, tires and other products-has continued to decline we just don't have enough competitors in most categories to make the BARGAINS price-competition model work. * "Manufacturers have increased their efforts to restrict retail price competition (which the manufacturers' big-chain retail outlets don't like). The most common version of this restriction is "minimum advertised price" policies stores that advertise too low get punished with loss of supply, loss of manufacturer-provided advertising subsidies, or some other penalty. * "The Internet has become the way to get the best prices-better prices than BARGAINS retailers can match-for many products that are easily shipped."Įven so, Checkbook is now developing an online version of BARGAINS for some specific products that most of us want to buy locally, such as major appliances and large TVs. Next: Still Pestered by Telemarketing Calls? No matter how you slice it, Checkbook is still a good deal. Steve - please cite the section in the law that restricted retail price competition by manufacturers is illegal. Manufactures typically have different price levels depending upon the volume of business a retail store does (Volume Price Agreements are usually required). For example, say the retail price for an item is $100 and that the sellers price for that item is $70 (call this Price Level #1). Therefore, the manufactuer in this scenario has two levels of pricing.īut, if the seller executes a Volume Pricing Agreement to buy a certain number during certain time period (usually a year), the price would be $55 (Price Level #2). To make sure that sellers who buy at Price Level #1 ($70) can still sell their item at a reasonable profit (otherwise, why would the seller even want to sell the items), the manufacture may set a minimum retail priced of $85. That would keep the high volume sellers, who buy an item at Price Level #2, from selling the item at or below the Price Level #1. What restricted retail pricing does is allow the sellers at Price Level #1 (usually the smaller stores that don't have the means to buy in bulk like the larger sellers) to sell an item at a profit.

When you fire up QLab for the first time, it will select as audio output whatever your default system output is. In Version 2 (the current version) there is a black teardrop that indicates the next event that will be triggered when you hit "Go." This teardrop changes to a green arrowhead when the cue is actually playing. Or insert a Sound Cue in the workspace, and navigate to the pop-up to select a sound file to load. Drag a sound file (basically, ANY sound file.mp3, aiff, wav.) into the QLab window and it will become a Sound Cue. The even type we are most concerned with is a sound. Not all cues need to be operator cues you can set up some to automatically follow others, and you can stuff several within a group and that group itself becomes a cue. Events are called "Cues" each cue is an instruction to QLab to do something. The basic format of QLab is an event list. When you open it, you are presented with a window. Again, it isn't nagware or spyware it won't ask for internet access, it won't ask for your admin password, it won't require you to fill out and return a form. Visit Figure 53's website and download the free version. Or a dozen different events in a carefully timed cascade. So with the tap of a single button, you can fade down one cue and start up another. QLab treats fades and pauses as just another kind of event. Oh, and you can loop, too.īut that isn't even half the power. You can have one sound playing as a background, then play two other sounds in a row, then finally take out the long one. QLab does this, but with multiple instances. A professional CD player or old school cart machine will play the sound then automatically move to the start of the next track and wait for your command. They want you to play one sound, then diddle around setting up the next sound. I've done shows on analog tape, on CD players, on iPods, on iTunes or Windows Media Player, and all of these are relentlessly linear. Now imagine this massive CD player is set up so well you can command it from a single button once it has been programmed. A CD player that can play a dozen tracks at the same time, or one after another, at different volumes, panned to different speakers. Think of it like a CD player on steroids. So that's 500 words, and what does QLab actually do? Shareware tends to keep the look and feel of the underlying GUI and that means it is faster to learn it and smoother to use it in a multi-application work flow. Oh, and a small annoying and productivity-related thing notice that shareware is usually better about adhering to GUI standards? Commercial software tends to use unusual functions for the control keys, hide the menu bars, and won't even permit re-sizing of the application window. The philosophy is to find problems so they can be fixed which is directly opposed to the marketing-driven philosophy of mainstream software that says the way to sell the software is to slap lawsuits on anyone who dares mention it doesn't work very well. The shareware philosophy is to build a product good enough that people will want to support you in return. And not cripple-ware or nagware, either.Īn aside. With all that out of the way, what do you want this for? Well - QLab is easy to understand, plays well with all hardware, plays any file the Mac can play (leveraging QuickTime to do so), takes up very little system overhead.and, oh yeah, the basic version is free. of which I will say no more less my blog get shut down by angry marketing people. It is also not the only professional-level software for its specific application - Sound Cue System for Windows is in a similar price range, and of course there is SFX. It is also not a Cart Machine (although Figure 53 has a digital one of those, too.) Also, there is no Windows or Linux version (although there are other, similar software tools). It is not a mixer, a signal processor, or a Digital Audio Workstation. It is from Figure 53 and is designed for use in theater and similar live-playback situations. QLab is audio playback software for the Macintosh. They even provide a space where visitors can request a location where they would like to see a server being offered. On the company’s website, they advertise that they are constantly expanding their server presence. South Africa is the only nation listed for the entire African continent. Australia, Hong Kong, India, Israel, New Zealand and Japan all are on the list. This may be because there aren’t really enough servers to list each region separately. VPN Unlimited groups together Asia, Africa and the Pacific. VPN Unlimited does have a dedicated Streaming BBC iPlayer in the UK. Europe has fairly solid coverage, but it is not as comprehensive as the network offered by competitors in the VPN marketplace. However, South America is only represented by Brazil and Chile, and no Central American countries are included. The company has a good concentration of servers in the US in locations like California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, New York, Texas, Virginia and Washington. In Canada, VPN Unlimited has servers on both the east and west coasts as well as in Ontario. Being able to disguise VPN traffic as HTTPS traffic clearly has advantages in these locales. Moreover, many of these places forbid the use of VPNs. KeepSolid Wise is mainly designed for people who live in countries where access to the Internet is limited. This may be one of the reasons why users are able to stream Netflix via VPN Unlimited, at least on some of the company’s servers. This software makes VPN traffic look like regular HTTPS traffic. VPN Unlimited relies on OpenVPN protocols, but it also has exclusive protocols that are called KeepSolid Wise. This means that an incredible number of developers have combed through OpenVPN’s code to shore up any vulnerabilities. Some of these are older and no longer recommended because better encryption methods have become available.Īmong the better encryption methods is a protocol that is known as OpenVPN. This means that there has been time to develop several avenues for encrypting web traffic. A sidebar is placed on the left side of the screen, and that’s where you’ll find most of the features that you need. Its straightforward design means that you can quickly find whatever you’re looking for. In VPN Unlimited’s favor is that their interface is easy to use. If you want a VPN that’s not going to be able to share any of your browsing history with government authorities, then you need a company that’s based somewhere more remote, like the British Virgin Islands, which is where ExpressVPN is based out of. If law enforcement requests data from one of these VPN companies, they have nothing to share. This means that they can have a no logging policy and actually mean it. This information gathering may include how people spend their time online.Ī VPN company that is based in a country that is outside of most of the larger surveillance networks isn’t bound by the same laws. However, people who have spent time looking into Internet privacy and record-keeping laws will note that the US is part of the Five Eyes surveillance alliance.Īlong with the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the alliance engages in espionage activity, and then shares the data they gather with the other member nations. To the uninitiated, being based in the US doesn’t sound like a bad deal. KeepSolid is the purveyor of other apps and services like Roadmap Planner, KeepSolid Sign, Business VPN by KeepSolid and various network tools. VPN Unlimited is an offering of the KeepSolid company. Experienced VPN users demand speed and security, and that means that it may be necessary to look elsewhere. However, when compared with the VPN reviews of competitors, it’s clear that they leave much to be desired. VPN Unlimited is not the worst VPN provider. Unfortunately, this is one company whose name oversells its capabilities. “Unlimited” also implies lightning-fast data transfer rates. With a name like VPN Unlimited, it’s natural to expect a certain amount of performance and features… While your RAW image data doesn’t change no matter which program you use to process it, you don’t want to spend your time performing adjustments that a different conversion engine would handle automatically. When working with RAW images, they must first be converted into RGB image data, and each program has its own particular method of handling this process. To be fair to Luminar, Skylum has a number of updates planned to extend its functionality in this area, but as it exists now, it’s not even close to what Lightroom offers. Lightroom can be slow when it comes to generating thumbnails, but it allows you to force the generation process for your entire library, while Luminar requires that you navigate through each folder to begin creating thumbnails. Occasionally while browsing my library it would simply lose track of where it was in the generation process, resulting in odd gaps in the thumbnail display. There are some automatic albums such as ‘Recently Edited’ and ‘Recently Added’, but these are all hard-coded into Luminar and don’t offer any customization options.ĭuring my testing, I found that Luminar’s thumbnail generation process could use a great deal of optimization, especially on the Windows version of the software. You can create custom Albums, but they have to be populated manually by dragging and dropping your images, which is a problem for large collections. You can apply star ratings, pick/rejected flags and color labels, but that’s about it. Luminar’s library management tools are fairly rudimentary by comparison. For those of you who shoot a lot of portraits Lightroom can also filter based on facial recognition, although I can’t speak to how effective this is as I never shoot portraits. If you use a GPS module on your camera, you can also use the Map module to plot your photos all out on a world map, but I’m not sure if this really has much value beyond the initial novelty. For example, I have a Smart Collection for merged panoramas which automatically includes any image with a horizontal size longer than 6000px, but you can use just about any metadata feature to create them. You can sort your images into Collections by hand, or automatically into Smart Collections using a set of customizable rules. Lightroom offers an impressive number of filtering options to make it easy to find the photos you’re looking for You can read a more in-depth comparison between the two Lightrooms here. Lightroom Classic CC is a typical desktop-based app that is a much closer comparison to Luminar. Note: Part of the reason that Lightroom Classic CC has such an awkward name is that Adobe released a revamped, cloud-based version of the program that has taken the simpler name. You can read my full review of Luminar here. The latest release, Luminar 3, also includes basic organizational features for sorting your photo library. An eager challenger for the crown of best RAW photo editor, Luminar has a solid series of RAW editing tools as well as a couple of unique AI-powered editing options. Skylum’s Luminar editor used to be a Mac-only program, but the last couple of releases have also included a Windows version. Lightroom Classic is available for Mac & Windows, and you can read my full review of it here. It’s still not exactly a speed demon, but it’s a popular choice among casual and professional photographers. Many users took issue with its sluggish handling and responsiveness, but recent updates have solved a lot of these procedural issues. So before you invest a lot of time sorting, tagging, and categorizing your images, you want to ensure that you’re working with the best software available.Īdobe Lightroom Classic CC is a bit of a cumbersome name, but it’s an excellent RAW photo editor complete with a solid set of organizational tools. Most programs don’t play nice with each other’s organizational and editing systems, which usually makes switching software a fairly painful process. Choosing a reliable and capable photo editor is one of the most important aspects of a digital photography workflow, and it’s important to get it right the first time. We are eager to offer both patients and healthcare providers in South Florida the full support of the Steward network as we all seek to emerge stronger and healthier from the pandemic,” said Dr. “Throughout the COVID pandemic, we have been reminded of the critical role caregivers play in the health and wellness of our patients and our communities. The hospitals included in the sale are Coral Gables Hospital, Florida Medical Center, Hialeah Hospital, North Shore Medical Center and Palmetto General Hospital. Under the terms of the agreement, Steward will purchase five hospitals and their associated physician practices from Tenet for approximately $1.1 billion. The transaction is Steward’s first acquisition since finalizing full physician control and leadership of the organization in the summer of 2020. Today, Steward Health Care System, LLC (Steward) and Tenet Healthcare Corporation (NYSE: THC) announced that they have signed a definitive agreement regarding the acquisition by Steward of Tenet’s five hospitals and related hospital operations in the Miami-Dade and Southern Broward counties. Acquisition of Tenet hospitals and hospital-affiliated operations will bring greater access to high-quality care in South Florida Track ChangesĪ necessary feature if you plan on editing your sequence as you go (which most researchers do). Make sure you choose a program that makes this act simple, with organized libraries that you can easily share with others. One of the best things about genetic engineering going digital is the ease with which you can collaborate with other researchers. The best programs will let you easily import many different file formats and databases such as NCBI. File Importįor the times when you’re not starting your project completely from scratch, it’s necessary that a program allows you to import files from elsewhere on the web or saved on your computer. These libraries allow you to store your primers, keep an updated inventory, easily share with others and automatically attach primers to sequences you’re working on (annealing primers). A good software will have features like auto design, cloning, and sequencing primers, as well as a primer library for storing and reusing primers you have previously designed. Primer DesignĮvery molecular biologist understands the importance of primers for successful DNA amplification. It will make your life much easier down the line. Sequence annotation is crucial as a project progresses, so make sure that the software has a simple, organized annotation form. It’s great if there is both a manual and auto annotation option so you can choose whichever fits your needs for a specific sequence. Sequence AnnotationĪny good software for designing DNA should allow users to annotate their sequences. Cloning wizards make the process extremely easy simply drag and drop your vector and gene of choice in the wizard, and you can visualize the cloning process. Look for programs with good cloning tools and a choice of methods with which to clone your sequence. This follows the trend of seeking molecular biology software programs that allow you to perform the widest variety of tasks in one place. Here are the ten things you should look for when choosing a DNA design program, whether you end up using Genome Compiler or otherwise. While it is very useful, I thought, “wouldn’t it be easier if ONE program could do many of these tasks!?” Luckily, in the time since that list was published, new software has been developed that does! My favorite, Genome Compiler, is an excellent, free program that encompasses many of the features mentioned in the previous list, and will satisfy most of your molecular biology software needs. If you have backed up your data on a PC or a hard drive, all you need to do is copy-paste and you are good to go. When you have the data already uploaded somewhere safe, it is relatively easy to get your data back. These methods can also be used to get Image files. Now that we know how you should be careful about not tweaking certain things related to your SD card, let us dig in deeper and see some methods to get back the lost video files. Part 2: How to Recover Videos After formatting SD Card? If you have fully formatted the SD card, the data will no longer be accessible. However, there are certain things to keep in mind like not filling the formatted SD card. Yes, it is possible to recover data from an accidentally(fast) formatted SD card. So, don't get cheated when engineers gobble up money making fake promises about recovering data from overwritten SD cards. If you have overwritten the card, you can't get any data back because there's none left to recover. The video files you are able to recover depends entirely upon how much data you have added to the card again. Can you recover Sony video files after formatting card even after the files are overwritten? That's a story for another day and trust me when I say it is nearly impossible. If you haven't overwritten the files or haven't filled the memory card again, there is still a chance for data recovery. When you format your SD card accidentally(or willingly), space where the video or image files once existed becomes available to be overwritten. The most common problem is that - someone meddled with your camera and ended up formatting your SD card. They won't be saved properly on the SD card and sometimes the card can't read and register them. When you use random software on the internet to change the formats, that can corrupt the files too. It is possible to save the file with a new format and the system finds it difficult to locate and recognise the file, especially if the changed format is incompatible. Maybe the camera's storage option caused an unwanted format change or you formatted the wrong card by mistake. To end up with an accidentally formatted SD card is not an uncommon occurrence.
